Testing & Inspection
Comprehensive electrical inspections
Reasons for an Electrical Inspection
Whether you are moving into an older home, it is time for a regularly scheduled inspection, or if there are concerns to have addressed, trust our team to perform an electrical inspection.
There are multiple indications that an electrical system may not be functioning properly. If you have noticed any of the following, call First Call Jewel right away. Each of these could indicate a serious problem.
- Flickering lights
- Malfunctioning outlets
- Crackling sounds when electricity is used
- Burning odor emanating from electrical components
- Another concern with the electrical aspect of your home or business
A potential benefit of an electrical inspection is finding ways to increase energy efficiency. An inspection may reveal components that could be upgraded to create a more energy-efficient electrical system, saving power and money over time.
Inspection findings may also prove beneficial to the lifespan and functionality of electrical appliances. Proper electrical output can help protect appliances from overheating, damage caused by preventable power surges, and compromised performance due to undervoltage.
How Often Should I Have an Electrical System Inspection?
Electrical systems should be inspected regularly, with a yearly inspection recommended.
Electrical Inspections from First Call Jewel
First Call Jewel will inspect your home for signs of improperly installed electrical components and check the quality of existing electrical panels. During an electrical inspection, our team will:
Open the electrical panel and check for signs of overheating
Tighten loose connections within the electrical panel
Loose connections within an electrical panel can lead to overheating and arcing. Another potential consequence is electrical failure.
Test GFCI and AFCI breakers and receptacles
A GFCI (grand fault circuit interrupter) shuts off power in case of a ground fault. This safety element, found in bathrooms, kitchens, etc., is to prevent electrical shock. An AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) is also for safety. Its job is to immediately shut off a circuit in case of wire arcing, a leading cause of house fires.
Check that ground connections are connected and tight
Ground connections are for the safe transfer of electricity during a fault. This can prevent an individual from being shocked and protect electrical equipment from damage.
Inspect outlets for signs of overheating
A warm plate, scorch marks, a burning smell, looseness, and crackling sounds are all signs of an overheated outlet.
Check for proper voltage in the panels and around your home
There are two main voltages for a home: 120 volts for outlets, lights, etc., and 240 volts for large appliances such as ovens and water heaters.
Inspect the surge suppressor system
A surge suppressor diverts energy away from devices, protecting against voltage spikes.
Inspect wiring systems for safety and functionality
Frayed, insufficiently supported, or improperly routed cables are all issues to be addressed, as are overloaded circuits and other problems.
Many homes throughout Eastern Idaho were built in the mid-1900s. Keep in mind that the electrical systems of older homes may not meet current standards and that a licensed electrician may not have inspected past electrical system work. Some of these houses may have undergone full rewiring modifications, but without a certificate of inspection.
Solutions for Electrical Problems
