Generally, air conditioners have a lifespan of approximately 13 years. This will vary depending on climate, how often it's used, and the quality of air conditioner you acquire.
Repairing air conditioners can be a simple or complicated process depending on what the problem is. One of the most common problems with air conditioners has to do with the lack of air flow. It generally takes about 400 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air per 12,000 BTU (referred to as1 ton).
Some of the most common problems with AC units include:
- Lack of airflow
- Dirty filters
- Blocked or closed vents
- Low refrigerant charge
- Possible leaks
- May not have been installed correctly
- Plugged dirty condenser coil
- Defective compressors
- Defective fan motors
- Defective compressor and/or fan controls
- Bad capacitors
- Bad contractor
- Thermostat defective
- Blown fuse or tripped breaker
- Don't just reset breaker or replace fuse. There is usually a reason they tripped in the first place.

Blocked vents (supply and return) and dirty air filters are the most common causes. The result of lack of air flow will be a frozen coil. If your AC is running and making noise but there is very little air coming out of the supply vents, you very likely have an iced up coil.
To check this, look for ice build up on the larger of the two copper pipes going into your AC coil. If it is iced up, turn the AC off, and leave the fan running so it can thaw. You’ll need to make sure it is completely thawed (usually 4 – 6 hours) before turning it back on.
Check your air filter and make sure all the air vents are open. If none of those are the problem, you will need to call a professional technician to determine what the problem is.
Other than simple airflow problems, most AC repair issues require the tools and expertise of a professional. Trying to repair most AC issues on your won will likely cost you more money.
