New Refrigerant R454b means some changes to air conditioning and Heat Pumps

In December 2020 a new law the American Innovation and Manufacturing  Act (AIM) was signed.  Its aim was to reduce the production of hydroflorocarbons that are potentially harfmul to the environment.  Refrigerants with a high "Global Warming Potential (GWP)" such as R410a were to be replaced with something with less GWP.  Most of the industry has chosen to use R454b which is a blend of R32 and R1234yf. 

One of the potential downsides to this refrigerant is it has a small amount of propane in it which makes it slightly flammable.  Because of this "flammability" HVAC equipment manufacturers have been required to add additional sensors that can help reduce the possibility of fire in the event of a refrigerant leak.

With the added sensors, the refrigerant is safe and works well in air conditioners and heat pumps in homes and businesses.  R454b will be the refrigerant of choice for the next 10 years and everyone can feel comfortable knowing it will work well for them and help keep them and their home comfortable .
