What is a Ductless Heat Pump and why would you want one installed in your home?

A ductless heat pump is a very efficient heater and air conditioner that is permanently installed and does not require air ducts. Using compressed refrigerants in the refrigerant cycle, we can gather and transfer heat from either indoors or outdoors and expel it to the other.

Air Conditioning

In air conditioning mode, heat is gathered from inside the home and released to the outside thus cooling the home.

Heating

In heating mode, heat is gathered from outside (yes even when it is below zero degrees) and released inside, thus heating the home.

Using compressed refrigerants, this energy exchange can result in a savings as much as 5 times more efficient, meaning for every watt that is used to run the system, up to 5 watts of energy is released.

Green Choice

Because no gasses or fumes are released, and so much less energy is used, Ductless Heat Pumps are considered to be one of the "greenest" ways to heat and cool your home.

Comfortable

Despite being so efficient, ductless heat pumps are very comfortable, and will make almost any space super comfortable in your home.

Where would you use one?

Ductless units can be used in a whole house, Bonus rooms, Master bedrooms, Offices, Bedrooms, Garages, Shops and more!

Basically any space you want to make more comfortable with its own thermostat or control in an efficient way is a great candidate for a Ductless Heat Pump.

Are they "Do it yourself" installable?

Because they involve the use of controlled refrigerants and require specialized tools and expertise, ductless units are generally not home-owner installable. There are some that can be purchased online but beware: If a ductless unit is not installed correctly with leak free, evacuated and charged refrigerant lines, they will not work well (if at all) and will not last very long.

What brands are best?

There are many brands available, and most are good units. Our experience has led us to install mostly Mitsubishi brand units because they have some of the best quality, are the most up to date and innovative, and have the structure to back up what they manufacture for many years to come.

Single or Multi Zone?

In a future post, we will discuss whether you would be better off with a single or multi zone unit.

If you have a room or space you want to keep cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, Ductless Heat Pumps are one of the best options available!
